Quick check-in to say HELLO from Loon Lake, BC! I cannot believe this place is a mere 40 minutes from my house; I feel like I've traveled a great distance to find this kind of solitude, in the middle of a forest on UBC property. It's a 15-minute drive on a gravelled, bumpy road to reach the lodges from the main gate, and I love it up here. Have I mentioned today how much I love living in British Columbia?!?

The lake itself is like glass in the morning, unless it's raining and then the fog hovers low and the water's surface wavers and shimmies from raindrops and whatever breeze sneaks through. I've yet to see a loon (or a bear or a cougar), but we do have a squirrel named Jeremy who will sneak in through any open doors to steal any available snacks. (And apparently we have a mouse in our building who helped herself to some chocolate-covered ginger snacks on Tuesday; this morning upon making my coffee, I discovered that the whiskered perp had climbed into my Ziploc bag containing my mushroom coffee, etc., and helped herself to the napkin-wrapped cranberry cookie I'd purloined from the dining hall yesterday. If I fall ill with hanta virus in the next week, blame the mouse. I mean, it was a good cookie, I will say.)

The Fed has use of the Johnson Cabins, which are two gorgeous log cabin buildings with eight lodging rooms each (and accommodation for multiple people per room), plus the expansive downstairs meeting rooms where our workshops and writing sessions happen. I've been staying in another building called the Pan Abode -- SO cool -- rooming with fellow author and editor Cadence Mandybura, a delightful roommate all around. (Her half of the room is super tidy; mine looks like a bomb went off. Naturally.) The Pan Abode has its own kitchenette and huge meeting space for folks to work and talk at tables or in the comfy forest-themed sofa chairs. The buildings pretty much all have gas fireplaces, which are great on chilly nights. Oh, and we get delicious three meals a day in the Bentley Dining Hall. Seriously -- staying in the middle of the forest in a warm cabin with running water, plenty of bathrooms, 24-hour access to hot coffee, and three scrumptious meals every single day? WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER.

On Tuesday night some of the braver souls in our troupe of scribes willingly and voluntarily did a cold plunge IN THE LAKE, followed by a spell in the sauna. Alas, I am not a brave soul. I am still shivering from the mandatory swimming qualification lesson in the unheated pool that sat in the shadow of huge trees at Campfire camp when I was 10. Brrrrrrr. Big ol' nope.

Last night we were treated to a "fireside chat" (which was actually indoors and not anywhere near a fire, other than the digital one on the projector screen, LOL) with Dr. Finnian Burnett, one of my MOST favourite people and writers on the planet. They read a few flash fiction pieces from their latest novella-in-flash, Redshirts Sometimes Survive, and damn it, they had half the room in tears. Finn's writing is so raw and powerful. Since I'm on the Federation of BC Writers team, this week I've continued with my online morning sprint group "on location." We did the Monday night as normal too; tomorrow (Friday), I will be back home in plenty of time for the 5:30 p.m. session, so you should join us! I will be sad to leave this gorgeous venue, but Rosie Cotton will be glad to have her mom back.

Today is another workshop with Finn Burnett and their partner-in-most-crimes, the hilarious and talented Andrew Buckley (https://www.andrewbuckleyauthor.com/), I have a couple of one-on-one sessions with folks who want to talk about publishing options, then tonight is our open mic. Not sure if I'll read anything yet ... there are 33 people in our group, which is a LOT, so we'll see. They've probably heard enough from me this week.

Seriously, if you ever have an opportunity to do a Loon Lake writing retreat (or a retreat anywhere outside of your usual four walls), I highly recommend it. Though I've been working on client edits -- my day job follows me everywhere -- I have squeezed in a few hundred words here and there on Please Don't Make Me Read This, which continues to expand like two-part insulation foam. Wow.

In an effort to boost my engagement with the outside world, my 2026 "resolutions" included going to AT LEAST one bookish event per month and posting more regularly on the socials. I'm a huge dork (especially on camera), and I am aware of this, but honestly, I'm getting too old to give a shit if you think I'm weird because the coolest people I know are weird and life is short, so follow along on TikTok and/or Instagram while I offer misshapen pearls of hard-earned wisdom and other random things that I think might be of use to a human or two, particularly the writerfolk.

There's a BRAND-NEW SOCIETY in town, darling scribes!

The BC Author Society (https://bcauthorsociety.ca/) is hosting its inaugural BC Author Book Fair at Chilliwack Heritage park on Saturday, June 6, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.! I am so excited about this! If you are a BOOK LOVER, plan to spend the day among authors and creatives and come prepared to SHOP.

Authors and artists, if you are interested in applying to be a vendor at this event, pop by the BC Author Society website and fill out an application: https://bcauthorsociety.ca/events/. Tables are priced from $40 to $100, which is very reasonable for an event in this venue (which is huge).

If you've never been to Chilliwack Heritage Park, there is tons of parking, ample bathroom facilities, carnival-type concessions from the Heritage Hut (they have coffee and tea too), and just a buzz down the road are all sorts of restaurants and fast-food joints. I've spent more than a few weekends at Heritage Park for dog shows and our Bard & Bloom booths, so I am stoked about having an opportunity to showcase my books. Fingers crossed I get picked to be a vendor! If I do, I will have not only books but PLENTY OF BOOK-LOVER AND WRITERLY MERCH, including tote bags (perfect to carry your book haul in!), coffee mugs, stickers, magnets, buttons, and more.

Membership in the BC Authors Society is only $25 CAD. I'm definitely going to join. Did I mention that I LOVE BOOK PEOPLE?

I tested out the BookBub Author Websites blog function ...

I challenged myself to write and post an entire article within an hour, and I almost made it. The BBAW platform continues to impress me with its ease of use, but I'm not a bells & whistles kinda gal -- I want EVERYTHING in one spot without having to go to MailerLite, Substack, Squarespace, etc., just to post about an event or breaking Jenn news. I have Google Analytics connected so I can see traffic stats. I don't need to get much more granular at this point. I've had access to a million datapoints and yet ... um, what do I do with them? The verdict for BBAW: So far, so good.

Although as I finished writing my post, I noticed that something went seriously wonky with the formatting, and random words had bounced into other sentences, the font size and style had gone on a brief holiday ... not awesome. I copied/pasted the article into Word, cleared the formatting, did some minor surgery, and then was able to repost into the platform. I am keeping track of glitches to let the fine folks at BBAW know (since this is a new system), but I accomplished the feat of writing and posting an article within two hours. Definitely a record for me!

The INAUGURAL POST: Two Truths and a Lie ...

Let’s test this baby out. I have been super impressed with the simple ease and organization of the BookBub Author Websites platform so far. I’ve not yet blogged here, so we’ll give it a spin, especially since my Substack has collected dust on her cobwebs. I love that platform and visit often to read my friends’ posts ... I just have too many tabs open in my head. I’m sure you can relate.

Also in the interim since I started writing THIS post, I have opened the Federation of BC Writers Zoom room to welcome my 5:30 p.m. writing sprint buddies* and answered three emails + responded to a tag on Instagram from my friend and colleague Dana Goldstein, who is currently reading Wish Upon a Rosie, despite having just arrived home after a harrowing travel experience, and I shooed one cat out from behind my computer no fewer than three times so she doesn’t electrocute herself by biting wires. (Ironically, that cat’s name is Rosie.)

I also have a board meeting tonight, so let’s see if I can hit publish before then without three days’ worth of revisions. A new game called PUT PRESSURE ON THE PERFECTIONIST!

OK, as promised:

THE FIRST TRUTH: Wish Upon a Rosie turns two weeks old tomorrow and has sold fewer than 200 copies (or around $700 USD total).

THE SECOND TRUTH: Those sales have happened solely due to the word-of-mouth efforts of my darling friends and found family, with a special shoutout to my BookTok/Bookstagram bestie, Alanna Grace Author, who is a GEM of a human being. Now ... THE LIE: I am satisfied with this number of sales two weeks in.

Oopsie.

Am I GRATEFUL for the people who love me, who support my books no matter what I write, who KNOW how bloody hard the publishing industry is? Duh. Of course. This isn’t a discussion about ingratitude or disappointment.

It’s ME, a writer, telling YOU, another writer (or maybe the emotional support person of a writer) the reality of the sitch. <-- oh god i shortened a word like one of the youths i am so sorry please allow me to repent

I have uncomfortably adopted the label as “best-selling author” because in 2014, Must Love Otters was #1 in the whole Barnes & Noble store, thanks to some killer promotions the marketing manager at my then agency had landed for us. Also, the book was priced at $0.99 at the time, so OF COURSE it zipped right past the full-priced competition. (Also 2014 was still the Wild West in the Kindle days, baby, and I shot myself in the foot by not publishing a follow-up way faster than a year later. Ugh.)

I’ve had other books (trad and indie published) hit the top 100 in the whole Amazon store and more than a few hit #1 on their respective Amazon lists. SO technically, I can say “bestseller.” But Otters turns thirteen this year—she’s officially a teenager—and I haven’t had a repeat B&N #1 since that lucky 38 hours in March 2014.

Wish Upon a Rosie is my thirteenth book. Thirteen is my lucky number. Yaunna was born on the 13th. I got my driver’s license on a Friday the 13th. It’s too early to say if ROSIE will fulfill her destiny or if she will fade into the background like the other 6000+ books published on February 10, 2026.

No—seriously, I was at Iron Dog Books a couple weeks ago, and the bookstore owner, my friend Hilary, showed me the 13.3 million books she can choose from in their ordering system. Thirteen-point-three million.

Estimates from a year ago said 6000+ books a day are published to Amazon. (And I’m sure it’s more than that now, thanks to AI.)

Wow.

A handful of my editing clients who have been with me since the early days are making big money from their writing. (I’m so proud!!!) But this leads to some serious comparisonitis: WTF is wrong with me that I cannot write the books people want to read? Am I broken? Am I bad at this?

Am I the former hockey player who was meh on the ice but then found his stride clutching a clipboard and yelling at the players about where to shoot the puck?

Maybe.

So, yeah, thirteen books in, and I still question everything. Especially since every single day we get news about how the ads platforms are changing their systems and making shit harder for authors. (Because Zuck needs another superyacht, I guess?)

And yet I ain’t gonna stop playing this game. Twenty-plus years in this business, two agents, now unagented (but ready to mingle!), thirteen finished novels, a nonfiction project barreling toward you sometime this year, a thriving editorial business, lots of teaching and collaborating with fellow writers through the Fed of BC Writers and elsewhere, big dreams to launch my own teaching platform and eventually a publishing company.

Would I love to be making six or seven+ figures a year from the books I write? Of course. Would we ALL love this to be our reality? Absolutely.

BUT I AM WRITING BECAUSE I LOVE WORDS AND I LOVE WRITERS AND BOOKS. And if I don’t do it, I WILL GO BAT-SHIT CRAZY.

The same goes for you, my dude.

Do it because you want to be able to look at yourself in the mirror and know that YOU are in the TOP 3% OF HUMAN BEINGS who will actually finish their novel.

If somehow my darling ROSIE finds her audience and then people read and say Hey that was lovely what else has this crazy person written and then they go pick up a title or two from my (extensive) backlist, that would be awesome.

In the meantime, I’ll keep writing until the cataracts blind me**, the finger bones seize, or the world ends.

And probably even after that.

You should too. Even if this whole game really sucks sometimes.

There will be two books. Actually, three. I have to split it up because no one wants a 175K(+)-word brick. SO, I will halve the main book into its separate parts.

The first, with the blue cover, will deal with life/writing craft stuff; and the second, with the yellow cover (clearly marked with a 2) will cover all the businessy biz. This will better serve readers as I'll need to update the business info at least every year or eighteen months. Shit changes so fast in publishing.

The THIRD installment will be aimed at my beloved romance writers, and it's called How Will It Fit? (Tee hee hee.)

Thinking about doing a Kickstarter for this series. I'd like to finish and publish so I can move on to my next fiction project, which is burning a hole in my brain.
